Stainless Steel Shelving

Stainless steel shelving is one of the most popular form of kitchen shelves and cabinets.

While at first thought, stainless steel shelving may bring to mind visions of professional kitchens, contractor’s workshops, and large home improvement stores, the use of stainless steel shelving has expanded past these areas into the home; they might be just what you need to help the style and function of your own home.

Stainless steel shelving is extremely durable. Stainless steel does not stain, show wear, corrode, or rust as much as other metals, which is why it is so popular not only for functional uses like shelving, but also for design and decoration. Stainless steel shelves can hold a lot of weight so that it is especially suited for storage. While they will work for practically anything, and most commonly come in the form of stainless steel kitchen shelves, they are especially suited for holding heavy items like books and magazines.

If your kitchen already has a stainless steel motif, adding stainless steel kitchen shelving might be a great way to enhance the theme of the room. You can add stainless steel wall shelving for some of your more often-used pots and pans, or select more decorated and design-oriented wall shelves for your salt-and-pepper shakers or cookbooks. The larger stainless shelving units are extremely durable and are usually very easy to assemble (assuming you follow the directions). Not to mention that they are also hygienic, which is why most professional kitchens choose to use them.

There are some negatives with stainless steel shelving for kitchens. Unfortunately, they tend to show fingerprints and grease spots very easily. This is especially problematic if you plan to use them in the kitchen. However, if you choose stainless steel shelves with a matte or brushed finish, the fingerprints will blend in somewhat with the design. These stainless steel shelving units also don’t allow for much customization. Because they are made of steel, you would need special equipment in order to modify them. They are also extremely heavy. Though this is a good thing for their durability, it doesn’t help if you think that you will be reorganizing the area of the house in which they are used.

You can find stainless steel shelving units online and at stores that specialize in home décor such as Ikea or Target. The cost varies depending on the size of the unit, the features, and the finish, but you can expect a shelf that is about six feet high and two feet wide to cost about $300. If you are looking for something that is a bit more affordable, moving sales, estate sales, and industrial moving sales may be the best bet.

To care for your stainless steel shelves, wipe them with a damp cloth. Stay away from abrasive detergents (it’s probably worth trying to wipe it down with just water before you use any chemical-based cleaning products). Wipe the stainless steel shelf dry with a clean cloth. Using paper-based products like paper towels can scratch the surface. Also avoid using steel wool, scouring powder, or hard or sharp tools. Any of these would scratch the surface.

Stainless steel shelving can be a great addition to your home. Whether you put it in your kitchen, garage, or office, it will give your home a touch of modernity and a unique look.
